Makueni County Responds To ECM’s Controversial Remarks Over Teen’s Menstrual Cycle

Dr Sonia Nzilani, Makueni’s Executive Committee Member (ECM) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, risks dismissal after making controversial comments attributing a girl’s death to her menstrual cycle.

Dr. Nzilani generated uproar on January 15 when she stated that a 17-year-old girl who died in a crocodile attack could have been targeted because she was menstruating.

She stated that crocodiles are drawn to the scent of women during their cycle.

Her words have subsequently sparked a national outcry, with the ECM being accused of propagating damaging stereotypes and spreading false information.

Makueni’s Deputy Governor, Lucy Mulili, has released a statement distancing the county from Dr. Nzilani’s remarks, calling them highly insensitive.

“As a government that prides itself on upholding the dignity of all citizens, we offer our unreserved apologies for the remarks made by Ms Nzilani to the people of Makueni County and Kenya at large,” the statement read.

Deputy Governor Mulili emphasized Makueni County’s dedication to eradicating myths about women’s menstruation health.

The statement continued: “The comments have understandably caused widespread discontent, and we assure the public of our unwavering commitment to accountability and reform.”

Notably, the Makueni County government was not the only one to dispute Nzilani’s assertions; wildlife specialists also refuted her claims.

Experts say there is no scientific or medical evidence linking menstruation to crocodile attacks.

According to experts, crocodile attacks are primarily motivated by predatory impulses, and the reptiles have sensors that detect even the tiniest movement in the water, driving them to attack instinctively.

Meanwhile, many sources indicate that Nzilani is on the verge of suspension as a result of her inflammatory comments.

The issue of pastors making dangerous remarks in public has been rampant in recent years, with controversial Pastor Ng’ang’a also coming under fire on Monday for remarks he made about an assault on women.

In a statement released on Monday, the Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) criticized the remarks as hurtful and inappropriate.

Ng’ang’a, known for his provocative and spectacular views on social issues, made unprintable remarks equating women’s clothing and makeup to rape.
