Raila Tells Gov’t To Stop Abductions And Killings, Calls For Discipline From Youths

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has decried the recent spate of abductions, torture, and deaths across the country, claiming that it is past time to put an end to them.

Raila stated that it was not in his character to allow evil to prevail, and he demanded that the abductions stop.

He spoke on Monday during ODM prayers for victory at Kenya’s Bomas.

“Haya mambo ya kuteka watu nyara, kushika vijana, kwenda kuwazuilia, na kuwaua iishe katika taifa letu,” he said.

Noting that the police denied any connection in the recent wave of abductions and murders, he pondered who was behind them.

Kipchumba Murkomen, Interior Cabinet Secretary, categorically rejected police involvement in the criminal activity in January.

Murkomen stated that the government has no policy on abductions or enforced disappearances.

The CS stated that anyone apprehended by the police should be brought to court within 24 hours.

“The National Police Service has confirmed to us that it has not arrested anyone and failed to take them to court as required by the law,” he said.

Murkomen moved to reassure the public that the NPS did not operate on the whims of any political leader, regardless of stature.

“As a government, we are in agreement that NPS under the command of Inspector General is independent and so we are not going to interfere with their work,” the CS said.

In December 2024, six months after the first cases of youth abduction were reported, President William Ruto told Kenyans that the government would put an end to the practice and ensure its eradication.

He stated that the government is committed to safeguarding the safety and security of all Kenyans, particularly young people.

He, however, urged them to be disciplined and respectful.
