RICHARD OTIENO: How Mastermind Recruited Suspects To Commit Murder

Police have identified Peter Oketch, alias DJ I0, as the probable mastermind in the murder of Molo activist Richard Raymond Omollo, also known as Molo President.

CCTV footage shows him and two pals plotting the ambush before fleeing to Tanzania.

They are currently in custody while investigators look for additional suspects, including the funders.

According to investigations, an anonymous individual hired the killers to carry out the assassination.

According to authorities, Oketch was hired by an unknown individual, who then recruited additional suspects, including boda boda operators and hawkers, to carry out the murder.

The group was reportedly promised Ksh. 300,000 for carrying out the plan.

The suspects were initially offered Ksh.3,000 each, followed by another Ksh.5,000, bringing the total to Ksh.8,000 for the six participants.

Inspector Patrick Wachira, the lead investigator, indicated in an affidavit asking further time for the inquiry that Oketch recruited Joseph Kihara Kariuki and Evans Aseka.

On February 23, the two were arrested in Molo town, along with Oketch.

CCTV footage purportedly shows the trio arranging the ambush before the attack on Omollo.

Investigations also found that a blogger associated to the financier helped identify the victim and directed the hired assassins to Omollo.

Following the murder, the suspects reportedly fled to Tanzania, where they were given shelter by extended family members before returning to Kenya.

Following their arrest, authorities planned to keep them for 21 days so that they could complete investigations, investigate other suspects, and identify the remaining funders and recipients.

Geolocation data showed the suspects were in the same location as Omollo on January 18, the day he was attacked and killed in Elburgon.

The prosecution said that a multi-agency operation is underway to apprehend the other individuals.

Police asked 21 days to complete additional processes, such as DNA collection, identification parades, and statement recording.

The three suspects, together with six others arrested before, bring the total to nine.
