
NAIROBI: Police Teargas Demonstrating TUK Students At MoE Headquarters
A confrontation erupted outside the Ministry of Education headquarters in Nairobi’s central business district when police used tear gas to disperse Technical University of Kenya students protesting.

Students were protesting the university’s closing. The university was closed on February 3, 2025, due to a faculty strike.
They intended to submit their concerns about reopening their institution to the Ministry of Education officials.

The students were heard shouting, whistling, and chanting loudly, ‘Comrades power! Power! Comrades, viva!
As they began walking, the students were heard screaming ‘Solidarity forever, solidarity forever, and the union makes us strong’.

When the students arrived at the ministry headquarters, they announced that they would not leave until they had spoken with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.

One of the students, Moses Okal, stated that they wanted to know why the university had been closed.
He discussed the neighboring colleges’ solidarity as they worked to find a solution to the reoccurring challenges.
“Next week they should expect more universities to help us in the protest if they do not give us an answer today,” he said.
The Ministry of Education is actively resolving the industrial action at TUK. A Technical Committee is working on a sustainable strategy to restore normal operations while minimizing disruptions. Students are urged to remain patient.#EducationKE #TUKStrike pic.twitter.com/Mn9LQyYqJw

The students were denied admission to the Ministry’s offices. They kept themselves entertained by playing football as they waited for the CS.
