Kenya’s CUE Announces Only 79 Universities, Constituent Colleges Are Lawfully Operational

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has released a list of 79 universities authorized to operate in Kenya.

In a warning, the Commission advised students to always verify institutions before enrolling in degree programs.

CUE also highlighted at least 15 colleges in various parts of the country that provide degree programs without a license to operate.

“For avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree awarding and which does not appear on the Commission list of approved institutions is illegal and their degree will not be recognized in Kenya,” the Commission for University Education said.

The list includes 35 public universities, such as the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

The list includes Chuka, Technical University of Kenya, Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani, Kisii, University of Eldoret, Maasai Mara, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Laikipia, South Eastern Kenya University, Meru University of Science and Technology, and Multimedia University of Kenya.

Other institutions include the University of Kabianga, Karatina, Kibabii, Rongo, Taita Taveta, Cooperative University of Kenya, Murang’a University of Technology, University of Embu, Machakos, Kirinyaga, Garissa, Alupe, Kaimosi Friends, Tom Mboya, and Tharaka Nithi University.

CUE also acknowledged 28 private chartered universities, including the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Daystar University, Scott Christian University, Strathmore University, United States International University, Africa Nazarene, Kenya Methodist, St. Paul’s University, and Pan Africa Christian University.

Kabarak University, Mount Kenya University, Africa International University, Kenya Highlands University, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, KCA University, Adventist University of Africa, KAG EAST University, Umma University, Presbyterian University of East Africa, Aga Khan University, Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology, The East African University, Zetech University, Lukenya University, Management University of Africa, Tangaza University and Islamic University of Kenya.

In addition to fully accredited universities, the commission recognized three specialized public universities: National Defense University-Kenya, Open University of Kenya, and National Intelligence and Research University.

The list also included five public university constituent colleges: Turkana University College, Bomet University College, Koitaleel University College, Mama Ngina University College, and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

There were two authorized Private University constituent colleges: Hekima University College and Marist International University College.

The Commission also issued letters of interim authorization to six institutions that are still in the process of receiving full accreditation.

These institutions include GRETSA University, Riara University, Pioneer International University, International Leadership University, and AMREF International University.
