Ruto Finally Fires CS Muturi, Reassigns Duale In Another Cabinet Reshuffle

On Wednesday, March 26, President William Ruto announced a new set of Cabinet nominations.

In the most recent changes, the Head of State replaced Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi with Geoffrey Ruku, and Hanna Wendot was named to the Ministry of Gender and Culture.

Meanwhile, former Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was shifted to the Health Ministry, and Deborah Barasa, who previously led the health docket, was moved to the Ministry of Environment.

“His Excellency the president has today instituted further changes to the senior ranks of the executives within Cabinet,” read part of a statement shared by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.

“By the Presidential action, the Cabinet is set to achieve its constitutional full strength.”

According to Hussein Mohamed, the revisions aim to strengthen the Cabinet’s ability to continue guiding Kenya’s socioeconomic development.

Following the announcement, Hanna Webot and Geoffrey Ruku will face parliamentary examination.

If approved, their names will be sent to the Head of State for appointment.

“The nominees are expected to bring to Cabinet not only the knowledge and experience acquired throughout their illustrious careers but, above all, their wisdom accumulated from their inspiring and diverse life journeys,” read part of Ruto’s statement.

Ruku served as a member of Parliament for Mbeere North before being selected for the CS position.

He succeeds Muturi, who had been in the role for eight months since August of last year before being fired.

Muturi has been an outspoken opponent of the government, accusing it of coordinating the kidnapping of young Kenyans.

During a recent news conference, the immediate former CS downplayed suggestions that he would retire from his job, saying that he was focused on maintaining government transparency.

Meanwhile, his departure comes just a day after President Ruto chastised him for what the Head of State described as ineptitude by the former Attorney General.

Ruto accused Muturi of allegedly delaying the establishment of Waqf, a charitable endowment where Muslims dedicate properties for religious and public benefit.

“As we move forward, we will continue to look at the issues that have been raised here, issues of education, and find a nexus between religious and formal education to determine what needs to be done,” Ruto said.

“On Waqf, I agree with you; it has taken too long. There is no reason for the delay, and I had a problem with the AG who was there,” he added.

“He was fairly incompetent, but now I have a very competent lady, and I can assure you the issues of Waqf will be sorted out.”
