Gachagua Hits Back At Ruto’s Apology, Issues Victim Meet-Up Challenge

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua encouraged President William Ruto on Sunday, June 1, to address the sensitive topic of forced disappearances with new demands.

Gachagua, speaking at a church service in Lari, Kiambu County, called Ruto’s previous apologies “casual”.

He challenged the president to instead meet with the families of those killed during last year’s rallies against the financial bill and compensate victims of forced disappearances.

According to Gachagua, the president owed recompense to the victims of disappearances and their families.

“I saw Ruto giving an apology in a very casual manner,” Gachagua said. “If he is serious about making an apology to those who were abducted, he should invite the parents of these children.”

Interestingly, Gachagua appeared to mirror Raila Odinga’s Madaraka Day speech from hours before, in which the Orange Democratic Movement Party Leader made an identical plea to Ruto.

In his 6-minute statement, the experienced opposition leader said that he has joined forces with Ruto’s camp following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ODM and the UDA.

Raila stated that compensation will help the country close an important chapter following the protests last year.

In a rare show of agreement with a Ruto ally, Gachagua stated at the church service that the president was likely to heed the compensation appeals because Raila had also highlighted the problem.

Gachagua added,  “I’ve seen Raila has told you this, and I know you’ll now listen because William Ruto is now dependent on Raila in today’s politics.”

Billy Mwangi, one of a group of teenage Kenyans who went missing around the end of 2024, attended the church session as well.

Gachagua especially encouraged President Ruto to contact Billy’s parents and provide an apology and compensation.

Furthermore, the former second-in-command demanded compensation for victims of the recent night fire in Gachie village, Kiambu county, which killed three people.

During the same church meeting, Gachagua lambasted a group of Mount Kenya leaders, accusing them of being used by the President to repeatedly disturb his events.

Gachagua was adamant that some Mount Kenya Members of Parliament provide the president’s camp with information about his forthcoming engagements in order to allow the appearance of thugs disrupting his activities.
