Governor Kang’ata Breaks Silence after Nancy Macharia’s Job Rejection

Governor Irungu Kang’ata has spoken out after former Teachers Service Commission member Nancy Macharia withdrew her nomination to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board.

Macharia refused her nomination on Friday, June 27, explaining that she had opted to accept a better position with an international organisation.

Many were surprised by the rejection, which happened just a week after Kang’ata recommended her for the role.

The former TSC boss claimed that she initially assumed the overseas job would be part-time, only to learn that it would require her full-time commitment.

“I hereby thank you for nominating me. However, I decline the post as I have received another offer from an international body, which, in my opinion, could affect my performance in the said role,” Macharia wrote.

During an interview with Inooro TV on Tuesday, July 2, the governor revealed Macharia’s contribution to TSC.

His selection of the former TSC boss to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board was informed, in part, by the importance of enabling career development for teachers.

Kang’ata indicated that the Murang’a county administration lacked a well-defined system for employee promotions and career advancement, which Macharia will bring to the Board’s attention.

Nonetheless, the governor admitted that her selection had ruffled some feathers, with several factions within the county raising concerns over Macharia’s age.

He mentioned that some of the senior county officials were younger than Macharia, including the Deputy Governor, Mburu Munania, who was only 29 years old.

According to Kang’ata, youngsters accounted for 80% of the county’s workforce.

The Governor did not mention Macharia’s age (62 years) as a major reason for her rejection.

However, he appeared to imply that it would have caused friction in the county’s workers, perhaps jeopardizing the county’s smooth operation.

Despite this, Kang’ata claimed that Macharia met the position’s qualifications, including 10 years of managerial experience.

Furthermore, the governor emphasized the importance of gender balance at the Board’s helm, emphasizing that because the present Deputy Chair is a man, the nominee for Chair must be a woman.

On Friday, June 20, Kang’ata nominated Macharia, who had just left her position as the TSC boss, to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board.

In the position, Macharia was to oversee appointments in the county public service.

She was nominated alongside four other individuals, Louis Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe, Brian Lishenga, and Oscar Kimani, who were designated as members
