UN To Build Diplomatic Hub At JKIA After High-Level Meeting

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will benefit from enhancements following a high-level meeting between the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs (MFA).

The seminar focused on concerns affecting diplomatic and etiquette operations at the airport.

The meeting focused on the challenges that the diplomatic community is currently facing at the airport.

Furthermore, the measures would help to facilitate their clearance and movement in accordance with international norms.

The two organizations agreed to establish a United Nations Humanitarian Hub and recognized the need for a dedicated Red Cross Logistical Hub.

Additionally, the creation of an Integrated Protocol Management System, which aims to digitize and harmonize protocol procedures across numerous agencies in order to improve coordination and service delivery, was explored.

The summit also discussed adherence to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), namely the rights and privileges of diplomatic personnel functioning in Kenya.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) is a historic international convention that serves as the foundation for modern diplomatic law.

It codifies and standardizes the long-standing norms and practices that regulate diplomatic relations between sovereign governments.

Its principal goal is to promote “the development of friendly relations” between states.

It will also provide a clear, uniform set of rules and principles that enable diplomats to perform their functions effectively, safely, and without undue interference from host states.

Improving, expanding, and ensuring optimal use of VIP and protocol lounges at airports across the country, as well as enhancing the security of the State Pavilion, were identified as priorities.

This will contribute to a more seamless experience for high-ranking dignitaries and diplomatic guests.

The State Pavilion at JKIA is a specialized, exclusive facility used for formal state functions, diplomatic arrivals and departures, and high-level government protocols.

It is intended for Very, Very Important People (VVIPs), notably the President of Kenya, visiting Heads of State and Government, and other high-ranking diplomats and dignitaries.

Its primary aim is to ensure smooth, secure, and discreet movements for these high-profile individuals by bypassing the major public terminals.

The inclusion of a “State Pavilion” in JKIA’s facilities dates back to the airport’s 1970s development, demonstrating the airport’s long history of enabling state protocol.

In addition to the aforementioned modifications, the meeting emphasized the necessity to amend the Kenya National Civil Aviation Security Programme in partnership with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) to fit with growing global security requirements.

This is especially true since major international airports, particularly in the United States, are planning to end the shoes-off policy.
