‘Sifuna smells like Gachagua, He Must Resign!’ – MP Kaluma Says
The MP for Homa Bay Town, Peter Kaluma, has reinforced calls for Edwin Sifuna to quit from his positions as Senate Minority Leader and Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement.
In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Kaluma stated that the Nairobi Senator must either resign freely or be dismissed by the party.
Kaluma accused Sifuna of sowing division inside the ODM, claiming that Sifuna’s public comments criticizing the party’s cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) had undermined ODM unity.
“You can be made powerful when young to the point you come to lose yourself. Sifuna smells like Gachagua. He must resign or be thrown out of the ODM Party. The faster this happens, the better,” he said.

The lawmaker stated that he had written personally to ODM party leader Raila Odinga, pressing the party to release Sifuna.
His words came after Sifuna admitted in an interview with Citizen TV that ODM was confused about the agreement they had with Kenya Kwanza and that, as it stands, the deal was not being implemented.
Despite the outcry, Sifuna rebuffed calls to resign. He stated that only party leader Raila Odinga has the power to ask him to go, and he will not step down otherwise.
“If I were asked to step aside as SG of ODM, I would. Even when I became SG of ODM, I was asked if we gave you this position, would you be able to do it, and I said yes,” stated the senator.
“If that same person calls me today and says, Sifuna, I have lost confidence in your ability to do this job; this position is not mine; I would relinquish it without blinking.”
“The reason I will not resign yet is that I have not given up. I have not given up on members of the ODM,” Sifuna said.
“There is still belief and trust within the ranks of the party that Baba knows what is right for the people and that he will do the right thing.”

Raila backed Sifuna’s words, noting that he has the freedom to voice his thoughts, whether they differ from those of other leaders or not.
“Everybody has a right to speak their mind. That is democracy, and that is what ODM stands for; there will be differences of opinion, and that is okay,” Raila said.
“If Sifuna has spoken, he has a right to do so, and if you differ with him, then speak out.”
“I have not said that you should not speak of certain issues in the party. If you have an issue, speak up, even if you think I have made a mistake, tell me,” he added.
