The Ministry of Health has withdrawn internship offers for 306 pre-interns following an examination into the Nursing Internship Placement for the 2025/2026 cohort.

In a statement signed by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the ministry revealed that more anomalies were discovered in the original placement list after 42 interns were found to be listed illegally earlier in July.

“Following a review of the 2,098 pre-interns posted on 1st July 2025, the Ministry has established that 306 individuals were not qualified for internship posting, as they had not yet graduated,” a statement from the health docket read.

The government also listed some of the institutions where students had their internship offers revoked, with Kenyatta University having the most, with 22.

More than a dozen tertiary institutions around the country had students with irregular internship arrangements.

As a result of the disparity, the 306 pre-interns had their internship offer letters canceled, and all affected internship centers were notified to avoid any disruption in the process.

The move came only days after Lister Onsongo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK), was suspended for allegedly violating regulations relating to unauthorized placement.

Further inquiry by the ministry revealed that an additional 316 pre-interns were identified as qualified but were left off the original posting list.

The 316 persons who met the eligibility criteria for the internship program will now receive internship offers.

The ministry has asked them to pick up their offer letters in person on Friday, August 1, at Afya House.

“Note that the offer letters will only be issued upon presentation of a valid National Identity Card,” Duale added in the update.

On July 10, Duale published 19 names of students who had not completed their studies but had received posting letters, causing the ministry to become concerned about irregularities in intern deployment.

At the time, Duale said that an audit would be conducted, warning that any individuals or institutions found accountable for including the aforementioned names on the list would face the appropriate sanctions.

Internships in the medical industry are among the most profitable in the country, with intern doctors earning a base salary of Ksh 46,120.

After accounting for allowances under CSG 9 / Job Group L, interns may earn up to Ksh 208,000 per month, depending on location.
