Bandits Resurface In Laikipia, Kills TWO Children

A bandit attack on a community in Laikipia County resulted in the deaths of two children.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the gunmen who carried out the November 5 attack in the Naibor neighborhood fled without taking anything.

The two siblings, ages seven and seventeen, were grazing their sheep when they were shot at close range by gunmen who fled the scene.

According to police who responded to the scene, a knife was located a few meters from where the two victims were discovered.

Tension remained high in the region following the incident, as more police officers and members of the National Police Reserve were dispatched to maintain order.

There were concerns about other attacks or revenge, authorities said. The area is part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which aims to combat robbers.

Despite its tenacity, the operation has successfully contained crime in the area and surrounding counties.

The operation focuses on Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo counties.  The operation has also been expanded into Migori, where robbers are increasingly attacking and stealing livestock.

In addition to retributive measures, the government’s planned crime control initiatives for Kenya’s northern frontier and the Kerio Valley area include strategic investment and long-term development.

There is also a continuing deradicalization process in the territories, which has yielded results, with some residents surrendering their guns in Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties.

More than 600 assorted weapons have been surrendered in a two-month exercise.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the long-term vision is to empower the communities to actively take part in the war against animal rustling and undertake legitimate nation-building activities.

He stated that there are plans to give discounted agricultural inputs and extension services to area inhabitants in an effort to resuscitate farming as a source of income.

Murkomen ordered a fresh vetting of all National Police Reservists (NPRs) as part of attempts to strengthen operations.

“We are coming to dismantle not only the criminals themselves but also to bring down the entire chain that has been the cattle and livestock rustling industry,” he said.

He also announced a new policy shift that formalizes the command structure of NPR officers.

He claimed that they will now be under the direct direction of the Officer Commanding Police Stations (OCS) as part of attempts to improve their operations.
