Gov’t Withdraws Governor Natembeya’s Security Detail

On the evening of November 25, 2025, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya declared that the National Police Service had withdrawn his whole official security team without warning or explanation.

The incident was described by the governor as a premeditated attempt to frighten and silence him. He underlined that, as an elected leader, he was entitled to security under the constitution.

Natembeya cautioned that the action puts his political independence and personal safety in danger. The by-elections on Thursday, November 27, 2025, are just two days away.

Natembeya claims that the state has been intimidating him using a variety of tactics, such as a Senate summons and false accusations of corruption.

The event occurred following Natembeya’s attack on a campaign rally in Chwele Ward, Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County, on November 22.

The Governor was campaigning for Erick Wekesa, an independent MCA candidate, ahead of the November 27 by-election.

Armed masked persons invaded the crowd, firing bullets and deploying tear gas canisters, forcing Natembeya to end his speech.

According to Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, Natembeya ducked into his car as a bullet passed over the sunroof, and the gunmen also targeted Kalasinga and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati.

Several vehicles in Natembeya’s convoy were vandalized, so the party took safety at Kalasinga’s house in Namakhele, which was then attacked, with windows broken and glass thrown throughout the land.

Kalasinga said that his watchman lost both hands and legs in the attack on his home. Natembeya accused National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula of orchestrating the political violence in the constituency.

Natembeya’s Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) immediately blamed the conflicts on goons purportedly tied to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, whose Ford Kenya party backs Vincent Maunda, a rival candidate.

The governor stated that the move was an attempt to undermine his attempts to promote unity among the people of western Kenya, as well as reprisal for seeking responsibility from the government.

The Interior Ministry and National Police Service had made no announcements about the security detail’s removal.
