Russia Condemns Gaddafi Son’s Murder, Demands a ‘Thorough Probe’

Russia condemned the assassination of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, and demanded an investigation into his death.

“We strongly condemn this crime. We hope a thorough investigation will be conducted and the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.

A lawyer for Seif al-Islam told AFP that the ex-leader’s son was killed by four unidentified attackers who attacked his home on Tuesday.

Libyan prosecutors said Wednesday they were investigating the crime and had sent forensic experts to Zintan, northwest Libya, where he was shot dead.

Some saw the 53-year-old as a possible successor to his father, who was deposed and murdered in 2011 following a NATO-led military operation.

According to the BBC, Libyan prosecutors filed an arrest order for Seif al-Islam in 2021 because of his potential ties to the Russian mercenary Wagner group.

Wagner has now been disbanded and replaced by the state-funded Africa Corps.
