ODM IN-FIGHT: Oburu Odinga Hits Back At Sifuna After Explosive Interview

Oburu Odinga, the leader of the ODM Party, has lambasted the party’s Secretary General Edwin Sifuna for making recent assertions that the party leader was not properly elected, among other things.

Oburu responded to Sifuna with a harsh letter on Friday, accusing the party Secretary General of ‘contradiction’ and stating that ‘no one is bigger than the party’.

Oburu stated that in recent months, the Secretary General has struggled to differentiate between personal beliefs and official party doctrine, causing uncertainty among members and supporters.

The Siaya Senator criticized the embattled SG for his remarks, claiming that Oburu was not legitimately elected as the party’s head.

Furthermore, he underlined that all existing ODM party officials are contributing significantly and are supported by Party organ resolutions.

“ODM has, since its inception, demonstrated fidelity to its Constitution and to the rule of law. The same principle has put every individual in their rightful position, including that of Sen. Sifuna,” Oburu stated.

“We want to state categorically that all Party officials are serving substantially and supported by the Party organ resolutions.”

According to Oburu, Sifuna also acted as the party’s SG without the approval of the National Delegates Convention and did not see the need to criticize the party when the circumstances were favourable to him.

“When Sifuna questioned the legality of some national officials on the basis that they were elected by the National Governing Council, he overlooked a fundamental fact,” the statement read.

“He himself was elected SG by the same organ in February 2018 and discharged the functions of that office fully and effectively until February 2022, when the NDC subsequently endorsed him.”

Oburu, on the other hand, did not say whether the party was considering disciplinary action against Sifuna, despite the fact that internal squabbles continue to escalate.

The party appears to be divided between those who agree with the Secretary General that ODM should chart its own political course and those who advocate for cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Sifuna himself has maintained that he will not resign from his position as the party’s SG despite raising serious concerns, such as allegations that ODM is being funded by the government, contrary to the law.

He has also stated during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday that his membership in ODM remains intact.

Sifuna insisted that the only way he could vacate the Secretary General position is through a delegates’ conference, which he says should be convened to offer direction to the party amid growing internal wrangles.

On Thursday, Oburu’s sister and Kisumu Woman Representative, Ruth Odinga, raised concerns over the proposed pre-election agreement between the two political parties.

“If indeed he is a ‘rebel’, then how many times was Raila Odinga one? Even in the ‘nusu mkate’ government, Raila would still stand his ground,” Ruth stated.

“If the MoU has not been honoured, with less than 30 days to its expiry, what is so ‘treasonous’ about Sifuna publicly declaring it ‘obsolete’?”
