NTSA Issues Fresh Notice To New Vehicle Buyers
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued the latest nationwide data on new vehicle registrations, which show a significant increase in the number of registered vehicles by December 2025.
According to a report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the NTSA registered 31,595 vehicles in December 2025, the highest monthly total of the year.

This is a huge rise above the 27,219 registrations registered in November of the same year, indicating a strong upswing in the automobile industry.
Motorcycles continued to dominate new registrations in 2025, remaining the most registered vehicle category month after month, with 19,572 new motorcycles registered in December, an increase from 18,839 in November.
The continuous increase in motorcycle registrations this year reflects an increase in demand for low-cost transportation options, particularly for last-mile trips.
Despite changes during the year, station wagons remained the second most registered vehicle category, peaking at 7,656 units in December, up from 4,639 in November.
Lorries also performed consistently, closing the year with 713 registrations in December, up from 532 in November, demonstrating that the country’s goods transportation is expanding.
Other vehicle categories that had mixed results throughout the year included saloon cars, which saw registrations grow from 308 in November to 495 in December, indicating an increase in demand for personal vehicles.
At the same time, the registration of minibuses, lorries, vans, wheeled tractors and buses also saw a marginal rise in registration to 204, 713, 244, 61 and 269, respectively.

The significant increase in vehicle registrations in December could be linked to year-end purchases, fleet expansions, and seasonal business demand.
However, reports indicate that the increase in registrations in December could mainly be due to the last-minute rush by dealers to import and register 2018-manufactured vehicles before the 8-year age limit timeline, which lapsed on December 31, 2025.
Under Kenyan law, used vehicles must be no more than eight years old from the year of first registration.
In 2025, this meant 2018 was the oldest model year permitted, which became ineligible for importation on January 1, 2026.
