Spotify Reveals MOST Streamed Music In Kenya, Heartbreak Songs Top
As Valentine’s Day approaches, Kenyans are turning to music streaming sites to express their conflicting sentiments, with heartbreak songs gaining steam alongside romantic tracks.
However, new Spotify data show that heartbreak listening in Kenya increased by 62% between 2023 and 2025, indicating a cultural shift in how Kenyans perceive the season.
Love song streaming jumped by 84% within the same time period, demonstrating that Kenyans are experiencing both romance and grief with similar intensity via customised playlists.
Between January 1 and February 4, 2026, playlist creation increased by 58% as listeners planned emotional soundtracks for the Valentine’s season ahead of February 14.
“Valentine’s Day in Kenya has become less about proving love and more about understanding it, or, in some cases, politely releasing it,” the report noted.

Gen Z listeners dominate the emotional landscape, accounting for 92% of “yearn” playlists, 78% of “simp” playlists, and 89% of “rizz” playlists on the platform.
Young listeners aged 0 to 29 are the most emotionally committed, gravitating toward introspective soundtracks by artists such as Billie Eilish, Lord Huron, and Tate McRae.
Contrary to popular belief, heartbroken music consumption is virtually evenly distributed, with women accounting for 51% of streams and males following closely behind at 47%.
Love listening has the same gender balance, demonstrating that emotional processing through music transcends traditional gender stereotypes and brings Kenyans together through shared vulnerability and true expression.
“Kenyans are planning their emotions in advance, curating soundtracks for love, for heartbreak, or pretending they’re fine,” the report observed about pre-Valentine’s playlist behaviour patterns.
Older listeners favor calmer genres, with Quiet Storm and Vocal Jazz emerging as top-streamed categories in 2026, suggesting romance approached with intention rather than grand gestures.
