HELB Clarifies Use Of Auctioneers in Loan Recovery Enforcement
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has defended its position in response to public concern about the purported use of auctioneering firms to recover unpaid student loans.
This comes after a loan beneficiary posted a note on their X account suggesting that their unpaid loan had been submitted to an auctioneering firm for recovery.
The message, published on Monday, February 23, prompted debate among Kenyans, with some asking if HELB had used severe enforcement measures against defaulters.
“Dear Masta, your Higher Education Loans Board loan of Ksh210,015.79 is now at Swipe Auctioneers. Urgently pay the loan today to avoid tough recovery actions,” read part of the message.
Clearing your HELB loan isn’t just the end of a debt — it’s the start of better credit, financial freedom, and peace of mind.

In response, the loan board stated that loan payback is a legislative requirement and that funds recovered from previous recipients are redistributed to help current and future students.
Borrowers experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to contact HELB ahead of time to discuss affordable payment schedules.
“Good morning, Masta, repaying your HELB loan helps empower the dreams of another deserving Kenyan. Take the first step today toward clearing your loan and making a lasting impact,” HELB responded.
“Kindly feel free to reach out to us via DM so we can discuss and agree on a suitable repayment plan that works best for you,” it added.
HELB Repayment Methods
To make loan payback easier, HELB established many accessible payment channels, including the USSD number *642#, which allows recipients to log in or register with their mobile phones.
After enrolling or logging into the site, the beneficiary chooses the loan payback option, enters the amount to be paid, and authorizes the transaction by entering their PIN.
Furthermore, borrowers can access the HELB mobile application by logging in or enrolling.

Users can choose the pay loan option, confirm their phone number and repayment amount, and complete the transaction quickly.
Compared to the USSD code, the app allows beneficiaries to monitor their loan balances and track payment history.
For those who prefer online services, the HELB announced its self-service on the portal.
One logs in, navigates to the loan repayment section, enters the amount they wish to pay, selects a preferred payment method, and finalises the transaction.
