"ODM Is In Broad-Based Gov't Solely On Development!" - Oburu Reveals

ODM Fiercely Defends CS Wandayi From ‘Public Lynching’ In Fuel Scandal

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has come out in defence of Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and his trade counterpart Lee Kinyanjui.

This follows the ongoing controversy surrounding the importation of substandard fuel in the country.

In a statement on April 7, ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga warned the public against attacking Wandayi even as investigations into the ongoing scandal unfold.

Oburu said that attempts to publicly “lynch” cabinet secretaries and officials, including Wandayi, who are not directly responsible for financial management, risk derailing ongoing investigations.

“Attempts at public lynching of cabinet secretaries Lee Kinyanjui and Opiyo Wandayi, who are not accounting officers, as some leaders are attempting, will only derail the investigations and politicise the scam as we Kenyans are won’t to do,” read part of the statement.

Oburu also defended Trade CS Lee Kinyanjui, as pressure mounts from the public for the CSs to resign after the scandal.

However, should the two be found to take part in the scandal, ODM said Wandayi and Kinyanjui should face the law.

“Should professional investigations place responsibility on their actions then there must be no sacred cows,” the statement added.

This comes a day after former Petroleum PS Mohamed Liban, ex-KPC MD Joe Sang, and former EPRA DG Daniel Kiptoo were released from police custody.

The trio had been arrested days after being implicated in a controversial fuel importation scandal.

They were released on Monday, April 6, on police bail pending further investigation and subsequent arraignment, although it remains unclear whether charges will be pursued against them.

According to their lawyers, who spoke to the media on Monday, the embattled former government officials had no wrongdoing in the Ksh4.8 billion scandal.

The legal team reiterated the officials were simply acting on recommendations from the National Security Council Committee (NSCC) issued on March 9
