UN’s Antonio Gutierrez Set To Visit Kenya Next Week For MAJOR Expansion
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Kenya on Monday, May 11, 2026, where he will preside over a key event at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) alongside President William Ruto.
The two, according to a statement, will preside over the groundbreaking and official inauguration of a major expansion of the UNON.
UN is rolling out a USD 340 million (Sh44.2 billion) expansion programme at UNON, reinforcing Nairobi’s growing role as a key centre for global governance and the only UN headquarters based in the Global South.
Following the joint ceremony within the Gigiri complex, Guterres is expected to address a press conference.
According to the UN, the expansion includes new climate-resilient office buildings valued at USD 66.2 million (Sh8.6 billion) and upgraded conferencing facilities worth USD 265.7 million (Sh34.5 billion).
The upgrades will increase the number of meeting rooms from 14 to 30 and expand seating capacity from 2,000 to 9,000 delegates.
This positions Nairobi as the third-largest UN hub globally after New York and Geneva, and ahead of Vienna.

In addition, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has invested USD 11.2 million (Sh1.6 billion) in new office infrastructure within the UNON complex.
Guterres is expected to use his Nairobi address to highlight the shifting global power balance and Africa’s growing influence in multilateral decision-making.
He is also expected to renew calls for reform of the UN Security Council to include permanent African representation.
Among the key issues on his agenda will be the ongoing humanitarian crises in Sudan, South Sudan, the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the wider Sahel region.

The SG is also expected to address the impact of the Middle East conflict on African economies and food security, alongside calls for reform of the global financial system, particularly concerning high borrowing costs facing African countries.
The UN described the expansion as part of a broader strategy to bring international decision-making closer to regions most affected by global challenges.
“This investment reflects a deliberate shift to strengthen Nairobi as a global centre for multilateral engagement and sustainable development,” the UN said in its briefing.
Kenya hosts the UNON headquarters, which serves as the organisation’s principal hub in Africa and a key centre for environmental, humanitarian, and development coordination.
The upcoming visit by Guterres is expected to further underline Nairobi’s rising diplomatic profile and its role in shaping global conversations on peace, development, and governance.
