Gov’t To Introduce New Mandatory Course For TVET Students
Students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions could soon be required to learn foreign languages as part of their coursework.
This is after the Ministry of Education unveiled plans to introduce language training into the TVET curriculum.
The announcement was made by the Principal Secretary for TVET, Esther Muoria, on Tuesday, May 12, during the launch of German language trainers’ capacity building and examiner qualification programme at the Kabete National Polytechnic.
Muoria said the programme is part of the government strategy to align ability training wth emerging global labour demands in foreign countries.
“Labour mobility is increasingly becoming a strategic pillar in positioning Kenyan youth for global opportunities and language proficiency is now an essential component of competitiveness in the international labour market,” the PS stated.

“Language training must now be deliberately integrated into TVET as a strategic enabler of global employability,” she added.
The move signals a shift in how TVET institutions measure success from the number of graduates produced to the number of learners who are ready to work both locally and abroad.
She particularly highlighted Germany as a destination for thousands of Kenyans who offer services they learned through TVETs.
It is worth noting that to work in Germany, one must have German language proficiency.

Germany, in particular, has allocated close to 50,000 employment opportunities to Kenya, the majority of which pass through TVET training, according to the PS.
According to Muoria, the initiative will begin with training TVET trainers and examiners to ensure institutions have the capacity to deliver certified language instruction before rolling it out to students across the country.
“The true measure of training is not the number of graduates produced, but the competence, practical skills and workplace readiness that enable them to be absorbed by both local and global industry,” she said.
The push also comes amid high demand for Kenyan workers across several countries, including the US, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.
The government is also actively facilitating overseas jobs, securing over 200,000 opportunities for citizens in sectors like hospitality, construction, and security.
