SIAYA: School Closed Indefinitely Due to Lack of Food

The Jera Mixed Secondary School in Siaya County was closed indefinitely on Friday, July 18, due to student tension and unrest.

Angry kids flocked to the streets, blaming the school principal for an alleged food shortage.

They staged a nonviolent protest against the head teacher, whom they accused of mismanaging the institution.

According to the pupils, they were only provided ugali and soup on Thursday night, and when they awoke, they were given boiled water without sugar instead of their customary porridge.

“We have been observing around, and there is no food in this school,” one student stated.

“The store is empty; we cannot continue living like this. Why is there no food yet? We paid school fees just last week,” one of the students decried.

They also accused the principal of chronic absence and requested an immediate transfer.

“The principal isn’t listening to us; he has been lying to us every day during the assembly. All we want is for him to go home,” another student said.

The students also claimed that several of their dormitories were breaking apart and that they were experiencing a water shortage.

According to the students, their problems have been ongoing for a long time, but the administration has consistently replied with indifference.

Following the turmoil and demonstrations, the Ministry of Education, led by Ugenya Sub-County TSC Director Bernard Orwasa, went to the school and instructed the pupils to leave.

Orwasa asked them to be patient while their problems were being addressed.
