Tragedy In Kilifi As KCSE Candidate Dies In Hospital

A KCSE candidate from Kaloleni, Kilifi County, died while seeking treatment at a Mombasa hospital.

The candidate reportedly died while being treated for malaria at Mariakani Sub-County Hospital, where he was admitted.

According to accounts, he sought medical assistance at a private clinic in Kaloleni after becoming ill.

He was eventually transferred to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital in Mombasa as his condition deteriorated.

Adan Ibrahim, Kaloleni Sub-County Police Commander, confirmed the occurrence, noting that the student’s body was transferred to the hospital morgue before being collected by his family for burial in Mombasa in accordance with Islamic traditions.

The fatal occurrence occurred while thousands of candidates were taking the KCSE exams, which began on November 3, 2025.

This comes after at least 14 candidates were murdered in a landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Due to ongoing severe rainfall across the country, the government declared that examination materials will be airlifted to Elgeyo Marakwet and other impacted regions, as floods and mudslides have rendered several roads unusable.

The government also announced that special preparations had been made to ensure that students who had been hospitalised as a result of the landslides received their exams.

“This tragedy has disrupted the ongoing exams. However, the government, through the Ministry of Education, has organised for the exams to continue uninterrupted,” said Mwaura.

“For the affected schools, the exams will be airlifted and for the one student whose left hand was injured, they will do the exam in the hospital,” he added.
