Governors Tell SRC To Revoke Salary Hike Notice For Fiscal Sustainability
The Council of Governors has urged the Salaries Remuneration Commission to immediately withdraw salary and benefit increases in light of the withdrawn Finance Bill 2024/25.
CoG chairperson Anne Waiguru stated that it was their noble duty, even as they collectively considered a prudent, fiscally sustainable strategy for the country.
“The Council of Governors’s attention is drawn to the SRC Gazette Notice No. 177 of 9th August 2023 on remuneration and benefits of state officers including County Governments,” CoG said in a statement.

“We note with great concern that the Country is currently facing harsh economic times that will require austerity measures and fiscal discipline and responsibility.”
CoG requested that SRC withdraw the proposed salary increases for all county state officers, including governors, deputy governors, and county executive committee members.
SRC issued a Gazette Notice on August 9, 2023, stating that state officers were scheduled to receive salary and benefit increases beginning July 1.
“Monthly remuneration structure for state officers in the Executive of the government will be implemented in the financial year 2024/25 with effect from July 1, 2024,” the commission said in the notice.
According to the notice, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, all 22 Cabinet Secretaries, the Attorney General, the Head of Public Service, and the Secretary to the Cabinet will receive Sh990,000 each, up from Sh957,000.
Both the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Senate will receive Sh1,208,362 from Sh1,185,327, which includes a Sh40 million mortgage, Sh25,000 in airtime, and an official residence.
Principal Secretaries will also benefit, with their salaries increasing to Sh819,844 from Sh752,519.
The Majority and Minority leaders will each receive Sh800,019, up from Sh784,768 previously.
Members of Parliament and the Senate will also see a pay increase, from Sh725,502 to 739,600.
Parliamentary committees will also receive a revised sitting allowance of Sh7,500 per sitting, a mortgage allowance of Sh35 million, Sh356,525 for vehicle maintenance, and Sh15,000 for airtime.
Governors’ pay has also been adjusted from Sh957,000 to Sh990,000, with deputies receiving Sh684,233 from Sh652,742, and MCAs receiving Sh164,588 from Sh154,481.
