ODPP Claims Rex Masai Killer Not Clearly Shown in The Provided CCTV Footages
Renson Ingonga, Director of Public Prosecutions, has provided an update on investigations into the alleged shooting of protesters by police.
He stated that his office received files from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) on four victims of alleged police shootings.
Among them is a file about Rex Masai’s death on Moi Avenue on June 18.
Ingonga stated that CCTV footage obtained on the material day does not clearly identify the individual who pulled the trigger.

“The CCTV footage showing the shooting does not identify the person who pulled the trigger,” Ingonga said.
The DPP stated that investigations show Masai’s relatives identified the body for post-mortem.
He did, however, say that the people who took Masai to the hospital have not come forward to give statements.
The key witness, who was with him during the shooting and informed the deceased’s parents after the incident, has not submitted any statements.
“I call upon any person with information pertaining to this case especially the witnesses who took the deceased to the Hospital and those who witnessed the shooting to come forward and record a statement with Ipoa,” he said.
Evans Kiratu Karobia, another victim of the shooting, died while being treated at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The DPP stated that investigations have revealed that the cause of death was multiple organ injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
“No person has recorded any statement regarding the incident of the deceased being assaulted. I have directed Ipoa that this matter be placed before a competent court for a public inquest,” Igonga said.
He encouraged anyone with information to record a statement with Ipoa.
He stated that the statements would assist the state in determining the cause of the injuries identified in the post-mortem report.
Gianna Obonyo sustained a gunshot wound in the lower back while riding a bicycle in her parent’s compound on June 25, 2024.
DPP stated that she was admitted to KNH and had surgery to remove the bullet.
He promised to review the case and issue further instructions once the investigation file and ballistics report were resubmitted to his office.
Ingonga stated that in the case of Dominic Mutua, the suspect denied firing a tear gas canister at him.
The DPP also ordered that additional investigations be conducted to authenticate the video and a report submitted by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) detailing the alleged incident.
He directed that a report from the ballistic examiner be made available to his office for review.
According to the DPP, so far no police officers have been found to be responsible for the accusations.
The DPP stated that he is currently working on cases involving 19 police officers in Nairobi, including one who has been charged with murder.
He stated that there are pending cases involving police officers in various courts, including three in Laikipia, three in Meru, and one in Taita Taveta.
