Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Duncan Mathenge recently experienced the anger of his constituents after being heckled while attempting to address people on Monday, November 11.

Mathenge visited Nyeri Town Downstage to sympathize with matatu operators who were being shifted to a separate terminus, a move that could have a negative impact on the transportation sector in Nyeri CBD.

Matatus is slated to shift to the new bus terminus at Asian Quarters on Monday, with Mathenge making his way to the ‘ground’ to show his support for operators.

However, the politician was met with animosity from citizens, who effectively silenced his attempts to address them.

Irate locals, including matatu operators, chanted against Mathenge, with some calling him a traitor for supporting the impeachment process against Rigathi Gachagua.

Videos of the incident have subsequently surfaced, showing the politician appearing speechless as citizens openly heckled and ridiculed him to his face.

The MP was one of 244 Members of Parliament that voted yes in the National Assembly, effectively supporting the motion to remove Gachagua as Kenya’s Deputy President.

Mathenge’s decision was perilous because he is from Nyeri County, which is considered Gachagua’s backyard.

At a different matatu terminus, however, Mathenge was given the opportunity to speak, and he boldly confronted Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga, stating that the matatu operators would concede to the proposed move.

“Mutahi Kahiga is used to pumping his chest. Today we want to tell him we will not move,” the MP said.

Mathenge has previously criticized Gachagua’s political tactics, which included attempts to combine the Mount Kenya region. This, according to the MP, would undoubtedly isolate other areas.

“It is the responsibility of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to safeguard the interests of the nation,” Mathenge said.

“He has to promote the unity of the entire country. In pursuit of our unity, we must be careful to remember we have ties with the rest of the country.”

Weeks later, a motion was filed to impeach Gachagua on 11 serious claims.

Meanwhile, Gachagua, who was also removed as UDA’s deputy party leader, has kept a low profile politically, lately urging his supporters to ‘say nothing’ about his impeachment.

“Many people are calling me, asking what is going to happen. Please, do not worry. Our community is very unique, and many were surprised,” Gachagua said during the funeral of businesswoman Lucy Wambui in Kiambaa, Kiambu County.

“They expected people to take to the streets, lighting bonfires, destroying vehicles, shouting – but no, that is not who we are. These people do not know us well. When we feel offended, we keep quiet,” he added.
