68 Students Hospitalized After Consuming Contaminated Meat

68 Form Four students from St. Thomas Aquinas Igumori Secondary School in Mbeere South, Embu, were taken to the hospital after allegedly consuming tainted meat.

The students were brought to Kiritiri Level 4 Hospital for medical care. However, three kids were transferred to Embu Level 5 Hospital for specialized care.

According to the school principal, the pupils consumed meat from a bull slain on Wednesday, February 5.

The bull was butchered to commemorate a strong achievement in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), which was issued last month.

The principal informed the media that Form Four students and two teachers feasted on the animal’s head and got sick.

They are reported to have consumed the meat on Thursday. Authorities are investigating the source of the contamination, and medical professionals are working to stabilize the afflicted pupils.

In April 2023, Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County experienced a significant health crisis when over 100 pupils were brought to the hospital with symptoms like fever and diarrhea.

The Ministry of Health conducted subsequent investigations, which indicated that the diseases were caused by food and water contamination.

However, laboratory tests revealed bacterial illnesses such as Salmonella typhi and amebiasis. Tragically, the outbreak claimed the lives of two students.
