IPOA Launches Investigation After Police Shoot Civilians In Narok
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has initiated an investigation into a gunshot that killed three individuals and injured several others in Lolkuruk Village, Angama Mara, Narok County.
On Thursday, June 5, a battalion of police officers reportedly opened fire on citizens for allegedly violating private land in the Angama Conservancy.
The residents then clashed with the police officers over the land dispute. While attempting to obstruct and calm the scene, the police opened fire, killing three people and injuring several more.
The seven injured were sent to hospitals and health centers in the neighboring shopping mall, where they are receiving treatment for serious gun wounds.
It is unclear whether the officers responded to a perceived danger or used excessive force.

In response to the unfortunate occurrence, IPOA’s chairman, Issack Hassan, stated that the Authority dispatched a Rapid Response Team to Lolkuruk Village early Friday morning to conduct investigations.
The team has been directed to gather all relevant evidence in order to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether the police officers’ conduct was lawful.
“In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read in part.
Furthermore, IPOA has urged citizens to remain calm even as tensions build in the county, which has been a major victim of land disputes that have resulted in several murders.
