On Wednesday, February 25, President William Ruto met with the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, Helen Rhys-Jones, at State House in Nairobi to address a variety of subjects, including Kenya’s strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom.

However, the gathering focused mostly on measures to strengthen collaboration on women’s empowerment.

According to a dispatch issued by the UK High Commission, the gathering aimed to promote women’s roles in peacebuilding and stability.

It also aimed to advance women’s participation in leadership in the political, social, and economic sectors.

“The Duchess of Edinburgh and President William Ruto met today and discussed the continued collaboration under the UK–Kenya Strategic Partnership, focusing on women building peace & stability and women’s role as leaders,” the high commission said in a statement.

The king’s visit focused on the UK-Kenya partnership and acknowledged the history between the two nations.

The 61-year-old Duchess is a full-time working member of the Royal Family who carries out official duties on behalf of The King across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, supporting a wide range of charities and organisations she is closely associated with.

Each year, she visits schools, hospitals, military bases, charities and community groups, engaging directly with their work and helping to raise their profile both nationally and internationally.

Prior to the summit, the study emphasized the important role Kenyan women play in regional security and stability.

The conference occurred at an opportune time, particularly as the globe prepares to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8.

Sophie is anticipated to engage senior female leaders in the Kenyan government following her successful meeting with the president.

She will also visit with women peacebuilders working at the heart of community resilience to better understand the critical role women play in avoiding and resolving conflict, bridging community differences, and enhancing local stability.

Her visit comes two years after King Charles and Queen Camila’s state visit to Kenya in October 2023, their first formal visit to a Commonwealth country since attaining the throne.
