TSC Replaces 742 Sacked JSS Intern Teachers Amid National Outcry
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has replaced some of the 742 junior secondary school (JSS) teachers who were recently fired across the country.
A group of JSS teachers at Asome Pioneer in Kisii have been forced to stop reporting to their schools, and TSC has replaced them with new teachers.
This comes exactly two weeks after JSS teachers agreed to return to classes pending confirmation from the teachers’ employers.
The affected teachers, whose lives have taken a sudden turn for the worse as a result of Kisii County’s difficult economic situation.
Kerubo, 33, is dejected days after she was told never to set foot in her school again, despite being one of the pioneer teachers in the JSS within the locality.
She’s been dealing with life’s challenges and has been indoors for three days after receiving an unexpected directive that exacerbated her problems.
“Tulikuwa industrial strike na tulirudi after re-tooling, the head teacher told my friends and I that we shouldn’t report back to school,” she said.
Kerubo wants the government to take her and her colleagues’ plights seriously, as some of them are family breadwinners.
“Tume ya kuajiri walimu inafaa kuobserve transparency…sasa nimefutwa kazi na niko na mtoto wa kupelekwa shule, hii sasa nitawezaje?” She lamented.
A section of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) leadership and other education stakeholders in Kisii are dissatisfied with the TSC’s decision to fire the JSS teachers.
“It’s a sad state of affairs in our institutions; CBC will die soon if the TSC continues in this manner. We want those teachers reinstated without any additional charges against them,” said Kisii KUPPET Secretary General Joseph Abincha.
TSC sent letters to the 742 JSS intern teachers whose contracts had been terminated due to professional misconduct.
They stated that the intern teachers failed to provide a satisfactory response, with some reportedly declining to respond to show cause letters sent last month.
The dismissals came just two days after teachers ended a nationwide strike that began on April 17 to allow the National Budget to be passed on Thursday.
KUPPET has since condemned the mass sacking and threatened legal action, claiming that proper procedure was not followed.
